Ancient Greek is quite different to modern Greek and even modern Greek had two versions up to recently, Katherevousa and Demotic, Demotic is what is spoken now

The Ancient Greek word for octopus was just πολύπους - many -footed - can be very transliterated to poly - pod . Also the word for things like cuttlefish.
That was just applying the ancient Greek ending to a modern word. The point was if you are going to reach back and try and do that to be fancy, get the right language.
Unsurprising languages change over thousands of years.
Even 3/400 years ago Londoners sounded like West country farmers according something I was looking at recently.

I like it we people try to be fancy but put a Latin plural on a Greek word or vice versa.
Like octopi - when if you are going to be technical, it's originally from Greek - so should be octopodes.

So many great words come from Greek, I'm glad I learned a bit in college. In Greek Mera is a day (e.g kalimera is good day) and the ef prefix is something like on or for, so it means for a day.
Another good one is Catastrophe. Kata meaning under or down (e.g katalaveno means understand). The strofi part means to turn. So a catastrophe is a downwards turn.
